DISCUSSION BOARD 1:
Instructions: Analyze the following scenario and identify which one of the following types of leadership (Level 5 Leadership; Transactional Leadership; Transformational leadership; Full-range Leadership) you believe will be most effective for Kourtland in his new leadership role. Identify the type of leadership and discuss your answer. (Suggestion also review Examining the Evidence 3.1 in the textbook)
Scenario: Kourtland accepted the position of clinical manager of a medical-surgical unit one month ago after working in the intermediate care (IMC) unit as a direct care nurse for three years. Prior to being hired for this new role, Kourtland was the week-end charge nurse in the IMC for six months.
Kourtland immediately encountered a number of challenges in his new manager position. Staff morale on the unit was low and the employees were not working as a team. Additionally, Kourtland quickly learned the unit had patient safety and quality issues.
The RN turnover on the unit is 20%. The unit has been challenged by unstable patient care technician (PCT) staffing as well. Only fifty percent (50%) of the budgeted PCT positions on the unit were filled when Kourtland started his position; and, the PCT applicant pool was scarce. The age range of the staff on the unit is diverse: 70% Millennials (25-40 years old); 10% Gen X’s (41-56 years old); and, 20% Baby Boomers (57-66 years old).
The previous manager had more than fifteen (15) years of experience as a clinical manger; and, was hired to “turn things around on the unit”; however, her authoritarian behaviors did not improve the challenges of the unit.
